Please take a moment with me and acknowledge the incredible work of Kelli Sturm (@sturmkelli) on our Diversity in Clay Project. Over the past year she has interviewed and featured 32 artists representing a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds, artistic styles, media, firing ranges & techniques in ceramics. For each artist, in addition to a series of posts on social media, she created an entire write up with images, quotes & links on our website, and all of them are indexed and filterable by their identified ethnicities and/or work style. She also included an educational focus question for teachers/students using this section as a resource. Kelli finished her time here at Bracker's at the end of September and will be very much missed for so many things, especially her energy, enthusiasm and attention to every part of her work here at Bracker's Good Earth Clays. Thank you Kelli, not only for your work here, but to your service to the field of ceramics with your work on this project. You make the world a better place. We wish her all good things in her new career in Human Resources!

Early on, I entered a lot of national juried ceram

Early on, I entered a lot of national juried ceramic shows and found very few jurors/review panels with diversity. This led to me entering shows that were national juried art shows and I discovered more diverse jurors/review panels there. This would be the first decade after graduate school (2002-2010). Most of my farm worker sculptures would go to fine art shows but get rejected from ceramic shows. This made me start questioning my path but my mentor Ruben Trejo told me not to conform and make the work that came from my Corazon (heart). I didn’t give up entering clay specific shows I just started reviewing the jurors and themes closer and then my work started getting accepted more and more in ceramics as the jurors/panels became more diverse. I hope to leave a record of work that other artist

I hope to leave a record of work that other artists will reflect on when they are creating to understand that personal narrative and the documentation of personal history is important in the arts. Our experiences are valid to leave a record of the world we experienced while we walked and lived our life. Never stop exploring the directions of your creative efforts. Each positive experiment and even failures are to learn from and will season your later work. Rejection is part of creating art and trying to give it a public image. With each acceptance of work in shows or opportunity to show work leads to more opportunities. If you are asked to speak or show your work, don’t miss out on the opportunity. Remember to take time for yourself and the people who are important to you. We only have a limited amount of days and hours in life so make time to enjoy the journey art making can take you on.

I started out at a private college and needed an art class for my first bachelor’s degree in History. The night ceramic class fit my schedule so I signed up not knowing what to expect.
I learned American Raku firing first; which led to my interests in saggar and smoke firing terracotta. I have continued to be influenced by work that is pre-Columbian specifically Casa Grande pottery and Nayarit work. I am also influenced by work from South America and other parts of the world made from red clays for my figurative work.
My ceramic teachers each believed in instilling me with being able to create functional pottery and sculpture not one or the other. I have continued this my whole artistic career.

Fire is the harshest critic and creative partner in finishing with this material that I love. My pottery is an exploration and play on surface and form that translates/bridges dos mundos of sculpture and craft together as one. Each piece I create I try to learn from to give me the experience for the next. My graduate clay Mentor Glenn Grishkoff always challenged me on when my pieces were done and if there was anything more I could do with it. This led me to explore different firing processes and caused a curiosity in my work still going on today.
All masks are 12" high, 6" wide and 2" deep. The firing process used, glazes and designs make each mask unique. There is a wire hanger on the back.
