January, while speeding past us, was an interesting and exciting month. If anyone got tired of the weather, all they had to do was wait a day or two for something different – snow, ice, wind, sunshine (not often) and both warm and freezing temperatures. It will be fun (?) to see what February brings.

We had three birthdays here at Bracker’s. Neal, our newest employee of about 6 months, Johnny for about 4 1/2 years, and myself. To protect the oldest of us, I won’t elaborate on the ages. Tasty desserts and the singing of Happy Birthday made each occasion special. It was also nice that whoever was in Bracker’s shopping got invited to join in the festivities.

We all look forward to helping our customers and friends whenever possible, so call or email if you have questions, comments, or just want to say hello.

Did you know you can subscribe to Bracker’s Blog and be the first to hear about the Glaze of the Month? In January, we featured Spectrum Camel Low Fire Glaze, Opulence Eggshell Mid-Fire Glaze (Cone 5/6), and AMACO’s Designer Velvet underglazes, and yes, featured = on sale. So, what glazes can you get at great prices in February? You’ll have to watch the blog on Feb 4th, 5th & 6th to find out! Want blog posts delivered to your email inbox? Visit the blog and scroll down to the bottom to find the section titled “Be the first to know!” Fill in your email address, click subscribe. You’ll receive an email asking you to verify your subscription. Click the link in the email and you’re all set!

February Coming Attractions

Next month’s Second Saturday artist will be Richard James. Read more here and be sure to mark your calendar for February 8, 2014. Stay posted to see if we’ll be broadcasting this event live via YouTube. While you’re marking your calendars, draw a circle around February 20th. It’s the third Thursday of the month, and that means open studio fun at Brackers. Despite the cold weather in Kansas, we predict that this will be a hot night. Details to come on the blog! We have a couple more surprise specials in store for February as well. Where and when will they be announced? I can’t say, but a little blue birdie told me to keep an eye on our social media feeds…

Looking ahead a bit further to March, we are all looking forward to a couple of opportunities to see those of you who can’t make it to our store in Lawrence as often as you might like. First, Bracker’s will be exhibiting at the Missouri Art Education Association Show in Jefferson City On March 13-15. Missouri teachers, please stop by and say hello to David Sturm! He’ll be ready for any questions you might have about your ceramics program. Additionally, he will be presenting THREE sessions at the conference: Need a refresher course on Ceramics or want to better understand clay and glazes? Sign up for his Ceramics 101 session, Saturday morning from 8:00am-9:30am. Want to better understand your kiln? Sign up for his Kilns 202 lecture, offered TWICE, first on Friday from 3:30-5:00 and again on Saturday, immediately following Ceramics 101 from 9:45-11:15am.

Also in March is the NCECA Conference, March 18-22, in Milwaukee, WI. While we won’t have a booth this year at NCECA, Bracker’s is a major sponsor of the NCECA App (available soon for download). If you are attending the conference, be sure to look for me, Cindy Bracker. As the NCECA Communications Director, I will be presenting a session at the conference designed especially for first-time attendees, or anyone who wants to learn some insider information on how to make the most of their time at the conference. Stop by room 102 A-C from 6pm-7pm Wednesday evening and say hi, or try to track me down later during the conference at the NCECA booth. (You might also find me “communicating” at the Hilton Bar in the evening…ok, into the wee hours of the night/morning)
And make a note now, April showers bring May flowers, but we hope they stay away on the Second Saturday. April 12 will be our big spring Raku extravaganza, a.k.a. B’raku!

January Event Recap
Chuck Watson and Aaron Riffel were our January Second Saturday artists. Teacher and student are reunited in this informative Second Saturday demo with Chuck Watson (teacher) and Aaron Riffel (student).

If you haven’t already seen the video of Jeanette demonstrating the Ultimate Edger (aka Ninja tool), you can view it below or on our YouTube Channel. Jeanette also threw and textured some pots with the Xiem decorating ribs. Meanwhile, Cindy rolled out some slabs on her Northstar slabroller. She then applied a thick slip and dragged various Xiem ribs through the slip to create interesting swirls of texture on the slabs. The slabs will be splattered with underglazes, and bisque fired. Cindy will then be applying some Bracker’s Crackle White Raku glaze and firing them in the Bracker Raku Kiln for a Don Reitz-inspiried wall tile set. Both Cindy and Jeanette were pleased with the textures offered by Xiem and the feeling they had in the hand. Xiem tools are known for their ergonomic appeal as well as their quality and ingenuity. As a die hard Jayhawk fan, the only thing Cindy felt could be improved was to make them in Crimson and Blue. Look for these tools coming soon to Brackers!

Anne M has been working hard the past few months to get even more products on our shopping site. It’s challenging to highlight just a few items, so we encourage you to browse through and discover the fruits of her labor. One section she’s especially proud of is the Coyote Mid-Fire Glaze category. Moving forward, Anne will use this section of our monthly newsletter to identify specific changes that have occurred that month.
Continuing Specials

The Ultimate Edger (on special for only $9 thru 2/28) is a brilliant tool for shaping the rim of a pot, defining a foot, creating unique knobs, and many other creative ideas (limited only by your imagination).

While you’re on our website, check out the clearance section. Royal Brush Mfg has discontinued a handful of their brushes and AMACO has discontinued many glazes. You can take advantage of some excellent discounts (and who doesn’t love a good deal?) on some great products. The deals continue until they are no longer available.
Finally, we’d like to direct your attention to the Web-Only Specials section. You never know what you’ll come across in this section. The Bracker staff has a tendency to put together some clever bundles at dynamite prices.
