Sharing an important email we received from (please spread the word!): Hello K-12 Ceramic Arts Teachers, In order to best support the teachers we serve, we have extended the entry period for one week to enable those we have requested an extension of time due to the changing schedules at schools impacted by Covid19. WE HAVE EXTENDED OUR SUBMISSION PERIOD
FOR ONE WEEK UNTIL JANUARY 19, 2021
Please do not wait until the last minute to submit your entries. It takes the foundation many weeks to prepare the submitted entries for adjudication and presentation as an exhibition. Our calendar for the opening of our exhibit has not changed. It is still timed to coincide with the NCECA conference schedule. The time gained with this one week extension will have to be made up as part of our revised processing of entries. Your earliest possible submission of entries will be appreciated. We all hope this extension will help many of our teachers manage the difficulties manifest by this pandemic. We hope this extension will make a difference for those who have requested extra time as they continue their work with students in these difficult times. Our Intrepid staff is working hard to get all orders filled, delivered, and shipped quickly despite some familiar challenges. It's winter time which means that weather can mess with our plans or delay shipping. Added to the fun, Covid continues to pose problems ranging from supply shortages to staffing shortages.
Our January shipping & delivery calendar is filling up fast and orders keep flowing in. Please help us help you by doing the following: 1. Place your order ahead of when you think you will need it. (if you already did this, go get a cookie and pat yourself on the back) 2. If you need things by a specific date, PLEASE let us know in advance and we will do our absolute best to get them to you by then. 3. Our thoughts are with the Swartout family and ever

Our thoughts are with the Swartout family and everyone at @continentalclay Repost: Continental Clay is saddened by the loss of one of our founding partners and sister, Mary Swartout.
She died unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, December 22, 2020.
Mary was a longtime friend of many artists, teachers, and colleagues throughout her 45+ years of involvement in the clay community.
In addition to her daily life at Continental Clay, she taught Community Ed ceramics classes, was a vendor at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival, and a board member in the early years at Northern Clay Center.
Mary played hockey (yes, she really did) in WHAM (Women’s Hockey Association of Minnesota). She was in a golf league and a book club with friends she’s known since high school.
Her immediate family includes her mother Juanita “Corky”, husband Arnie, son Seth (Trista), granddaughter Josie, and eight brothers and sisters. Her father, Clarence “Em,” and brother Phil preceded her in death. She had many nieces, nephews and in the Swartout tradition, extra family members.
Services are pending due to navigating the current COVID restrictions.
Mary was rarely on time for appointments, but this time she was far too early.

Today we are excited to share this work created by an unknown artist from Africa. We have some very dear friends who were stationed in Abuja for several years. They brought these pieces to us and shared some interesting information about the regions and tribes in Nigeria. (please note, this is cursory information, there is, of course, a much deeper view that should be explored) To the north are the Hausa-Fulani, and they are primarily leatherworkers. In the east there are about 40 different ethnic groups, but this heavily forested region consists primarily of furriers. The ironwork of the Yoruba people dominates the western portion of the country, and in the south are the Igbo (pronounced Eebo) people work in clay. Provenance of the pieces here is unknown. Likely from south Nigeria, maybe delta area. Most likely Igbo or a sub grouping given the motifs. No patina of use/extreme age. Given what the merchant sold, they may be masterwork, but the pots are somewhat fragile. They may have been master artisan “trade house” proofs of skill and craftsmanship. We plan to contact KU's Spencer Art Museum or perhaps the Nelson for further information and possibly donation/display of these pieces. ************ In 2020, we spent about 6 months posting highlighting work of traditionally underrepresented ceramic artists. In November, we paused these posts as we considered how we could do more and do even better. In 2021, we will be resuming artist spotlight posts in a modified way. While we finish preparations, we will be re-sharing older posts in our Instagram story and creating a highlight from those stories.
