As Raku Season continues you may be looking for a glaze that is fresh and exicting, but won’t leave you feeling blue…

AMACO’s Bluebell will fit the bill.  I really enjoyed my tests of this glaze.  While I enjoy a good flashy metallic raku glaze as much as the next person, I also enjoy the more subtle effects of a less coppery glaze like this one.  With surface colors ranging from pale blues to light greens, with some variegation of deep red strands, this Raku glaze is a refreshing take on Raku ware.  I had fun experimenting with additional treatments over, under, and in combination with the piece.  One of my favorite surfaces was the result of brushing a cobalt stain and a manganese stain on the piece prior to applying two coats of the bluebell glaze.   I also was very fond of the unreduced surface.

In future use of this glaze, I’d like to fire with it prior to a storm.  The low pressure front would result in hotter temperatures overall and stronger reduction in the post-firing.  I’d very much like to see what the results of that test would be.

In the meantime, you can pick up a pint of Bluebell at Bracker’s at a special price for the month of May.
