What questions do I ask (and who do I ask them of?)

Typically, there will be two parts of the bid request phase that you will be responsible for. The first is all of the items that will be bid out by the architectural company. This is usually the first step and may include your kiln and most likely includes desks, cabinets, carts etc, basically anything that is more or less permanent. The second phase is all the other non-consumables for your room. This is usually bid out by the district or school itself. You will probably have more input into this bid process than the architect’s bids. Most likely, there will be specific forms for you to fill out about what you need for your room. There may even be a section for justification of items etc. These are all questions you should ask your principal. Often the secretary will also know the answers to these types of questions. In a larger district with multiple schools at each level, there will probably be a district coordinator to whom you should direct your questions. Basically, whomever asked you to come up with a list of supplies is the person you should ask the following questions of:

  1. When will the school be opening?
  2. What is the overall procedure and plan?
  3. What are my deadlines?
  4. Do I need to fill out specific forms for the equipment I need? If so, where do I get those? If not, is there a format I should follow to make things more clear?
  5. Who is our contact at the architectural company? May I contact that person directly with questions?
  6. Do I have a budget?
  7. What is my budget?
  8. Will I be contacted before spending cuts are made to my request?
