DINNERWARE SAFE***

AMACO Velvets semi-translucent underglazes offer two finish possibilities. When left unglazed they have the appearance of velour or velvet. They will intensify in color when covered with an AMACO Clear Transparent Gloss glaze. Velvets tolerate a wide firing range with recommended firing temperature being that of the clay used. The color chip shown above is on a low-fire white clay body; half of the color sample has no clear glaze and the other half is shown covered with LG10 Clear Transparent. For a downloadable PDF of the full color chart and list prices, click here.

All the Velvets are very rich colors and can be used for an all over coverage similar to an opaque underglaze. They fire true to color as applied from the jar and may be intermixed to create a palette of hundreds of colors. The colors may be brushed (1) on greenware which is to be bisque fired before applying a covering glaze or (2) on a mature Cone 04 (1971°F, 1077°C) bisque, then a covering glaze applied. Velvet Underglazes are semi-transluscent with one brushed coat and opaque with two to three brushed coats. For opaque coverage by brushing, the consistency of the color in the jar is correct.

NOTES: V-317 Medium Pink will change color and blister at Cone 5. V-303 Terra Cotta will fade away when glazed over. If you need to use this color and glaze it, then substitute with V-366 Teddy Bear Brown. Velvets 380-384 have a unique formula that makes them very versatile. They can be used in detailed design work as a Cone 05/06 underglaze or they can be fired up to Cone 6 and maintain their intensity and brightness. V-387 Bright Red, V-388 Radiant Red, V-389 Flame Orange, V-390 Bright Orange, and V-391 Intense Yellow are the latest addition of very bright colors. These colors, when applied and fired, have a very vivid, luminescent glow.

Velvets were developed to be used without a glaze cover. They should not be used on surfaces which come into contact with food or drink without a dinnerware safe clear glaze over them. AMACO glazes LG-9, LG-10, F-10, DC-10, and HF-9 are recommended as clear glazes over Velvets. V-327 will appear Green Turquoise under LG-9 and Blue Turquoise under LG-10. For best results, apply two coats only of V-317, 318, 321, 322, 325, 326, 371, and 375.

***AMACO Velvet Underglazes have only been tested and approved as dinnerware safe when applied and fired under LG-10 Clear Glaze. Other glazes may also be used. Tableware producers must have all finished ware tested and approved as safe for dinnerware through a certified laboratory due to possible variations in firing temperature and possible contamination.

VELVET COLOR VARIATIONS

AMACO Underglazes can be used and fired to the temperature of the clay on which they are used. However, some colors may change, fade away partially, or entirely disappear when used at mid-range or high temperatures. The color chips on this web site show the colors when they are fired to Cone 05 on a white earthenware clay body. The chart below describes how the Velvet Underglazes may appear when fired hotter, with and without a clear glaze. Obviously, the color descriptions below rely heavily on color perception, which is very subjective. Please use this chart as a guideline and do your own testing prior to using the underglazes on a critical piece of your artwork.
