Join us on February 12, 2020!

for Global Day of Clay

Bracker’s is proud to be participating in the world’s celebration of clay for the third time.  This grassroots effort, started by New York’s 92nd St Y and the NCECA organization has grown in its reach each year.  The ultimate goal, of course, being to have every community in the world sharing a love of creation through this earthy medium.

Here in Lawrence, we invite you to come out and get your hands in clay.  We have events in store, and for those of you who live too far to join us in person, we are sharing some of it online too!

Check out what we have planned for you:

In StoreOnline

#GlobalDayofClay connects people around the world for one day—to share ideas and concepts, to showcase their own work and others, and to celebrate ceramics in all formats and industries.

The Return of “Pug to Mug”

Back in October 2017, when the Global Day of Clay premiered, Bracker’s participated by showing off its then brand new clay mixing operation.   We also invited potters to come and create a handmade mug, which would then be bisqued, glazed, & fired again.  The finished mugs would be later be used to create a slew of downtown Lawrence “muggings”.  These muggings included giving a handmade mug to an unsuspecting community member and inviting them to use it to drink their favourite cup of coffee or tea.  We included a note about handmade pottery and hope that the mugs found happy homes with their new owners.

With that in mind, we will be giving tours/demos on demand of our clay mxing operation!  Stop by and see how your clay is made!

Play with clay on the Global Day!

4 different clay bodies will be available for visitors to try out!  Make a mug for future “muggings” or try something new just for you

Earthenware Red +

Ideal for handbuilding, this low-fire red clay contains both grog and sand.  This clay  is also great for throwing (may need some wedgeing first, to soften it up . l Its intended firing range is cone 06-04, however, recent testing of this body has revealed it to fire out to a beautiful dark brick red at cone 6.

Terra Blanc Paper Clay

Have you tried paper clay yet?  The addition of paper fibers to any clay body incresases its green strength.  The fibers burn out in the kiln leaving the fired work lighter and thinner.   Our popular Terra Blanc clay with the addition of paper will be out for you to try!

Red Rover

One of our newest clays, and now in its final phase of testing/ development, this red stoneware clay is perfect for throwing or handbuilding and  fires out to Cone 5.    We’re still taking nominations for the name of this bricky body.  Red Rover now has competition… Red Robin!  Yummm (?)

Kansas Wheat

Another new clay, recently releasted for beta testing Kansas Wheat fires a light golden color at Cone 5.  We’ve heard that it throws nicely and we’re excited to see all the work that our first round testers are making with it.  Come give it a try and tell us what you think!

Hanging Planter Project

If you visited us for Small Business Saturday last November, you may have seen Cindy making these geometric, slab-built hanging planters in the store.  If you missed coming in that day, don’t fret, because she’s going to be back for more!

Come join in the fun and learn the whole process, including adding texture, surface decoration or other embellishments.

Cone Box Show

If you haven’t already checked out the 2020 International Cone Box show, The #globaldayofclay is a great time to do so!   We always enjoy the opportunity to set up a small gallery in the Bracker’s showroom.  That the display of the Cone Box Show coincides with GDoC is even more perfect.  Click here for more information on the Cone Box show

The Cone Box Show will be on display until February 28th.  We will have a closing reception here at Bracker’s from 5:30-7:30 on the 28th and then the show will be packed up and sent out to the NCECA Conference in Richmond, VA where it will be on display from Tuesday March 24th at the opening reception from 6-8pm until Friday March 27th at 4:30pm
